A project made by David Pérez in 1999 at the National University of Colombia, Medellín campus, on the Central Library square.
It was carried out as part of a sculpture class that sought, through an intervention on campus, to confront the individual with space: how to materialise the idea and what function the proposal could have within that space.
In particular, the proposal set out to work with the subject’s orientation in space — to place a reference point on campus that people pass regularly and that would also serve as a landmark within the institution.
- Strategic location: National University of Colombia, Medellín campus, Central Library square.
- Design: after studying the site and the community’s orientation needs, I decided to create an image that would be a direct reference for the institution and also give a sense of location on campus and in the city. Diameter: 2.50 metres.
- Execution: made with 3 mm gravel aggregate, a material used in construction to ornament architectural spaces. A drawing inside the circle delimited the figure and colours; then the texture and colour were applied with the chosen material.
- Views: different views of the piece in the space. Aerial view. Panoramic view.
- Conclusion: choosing a central place on campus with no specific function in its original form lets the individual interact plastically with a shape that already revealed the intention of the architectural space — relating the space to a compass gives an immediate reference for one’s position in the university space.
