Archived Identities: Photography, Memory and Change
My artistic and research focus is on collecting and analysing photographic archives, especially ID photographs. Often regarded as a mere bureaucratic necessity, these images are in fact fragile carriers of personal and collective memory. They document not only faces but also the transformation of materials, colours and technological processes.
The chemical composition of analogue film, its fading and the shifting of its colours over the years tell of the transience of the image’s physical carriers and of the changing perception of identity. Through digital mediation — restoration, reinterpretation or deconstruction — new spaces of meaning emerge in which past and present overlap.
My work investigates how ID photography is transformed in the digital age and what happens to these images once they are detached from their original context. In this exploration I question not only the ephemeral nature of photographic memory but also the influence of technology on our collective visual memory.
